Despite wet and cold conditions the veterans of Timor-Leste marched in Perth's ANZAC Day march today. The veterans marching alongside the veterans and family of the 2nd/2nd Commandoes were cheered and applauded by the many thousands gathered in St Georges Terrace, one of the main streets of Perth.
A highlight was meeting again with Keith Hayes, one of only two surviving Australian veterans that fought in Timor in 1942 as a part of the 2nd/2nd. Keith was presented with the flag of FALINTIL to express appreciation for a lifetime of kindness toward Timor-Leste.
Look out for his story to be told on 7:30 to be broadcast on the ABC tonight.
